Local SEO in South Africa: city pages, Google Business, and being findable in 2026
Published 2026-08-05 · Updated 2026-09-01 · 10 min
How Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria businesses should structure websites so Google — and AI crawlers — can recommend them.
Most 'near me' searches are buyers with a problem today. Local SEO is how those people find a business that is actually equipped, instead of the franchise that outspent everyone on ads in 2019 and never updated the NAP.
Google Business Profile is not optional
Categories, hours, photos, products, WhatsApp, and review responses still do more for a suburban clinic than another blog about 'the importance of wellness'. Your website and your profile must say the same name, address, and phone. Inconsistency is how you look like two businesses, or none.
One city is not a keyword stuffed into the footer
If you serve Johannesburg and Pretoria, those are different pages with different proof: suburbs, parking, hospital proximity, court proximity, delivery zones. Client Found Flagship includes up to four city landers because they earn their index. Thin 'we also serve' paragraphs do not.
- ▸Unique headline and unique photos or graphic stills.
- ▸Areas served named in language humans use (Fourways, not only 'northern suburbs').
- ▸A map or a clear address. If you are remote-first, say so — do not fake a reception.
- ▸Internal links from services to cities and back.
Reviews are content
Ask after a win, not in a batch email nobody trusts. Reply to negatives like an adult. Do not buy reviews. Google has seen every trick; so have your buyers.
Technical extras that now matter
Schema for LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and Article. An XML sitemap that lists every city and service URL. robots.txt that does not accidentally block important paths. Canonical tags so HTTPS and www are not competing with yourself. An llms.txt file that states who you are, where you work, and what you charge — so answer engines have a primary source.
Language
English will carry most commercial sites. If a meaningful share of your buyers searches in Afrikaans or wants a Zulu path, plan it as real pages, not a plugin that machine-translates your legal copy at 2am. We can architect bilingual Flagship builds when you say so at kickoff.
Local SEO is slow compared with ads and fast compared with hoping. Pair it with a site that converts or you will rank for the privilege of bouncing people. That pairing is the Commercial package.
